800-year-old Shakusui-en pond garden

Built some 800 years ago at the foot of a mountain in the scenic Higashiyama temple district, 10,000-square-metre (100,000-square-foot), circuit-style ikeniwa, or pond garden, is a haven of quiet dignity – and one of the few remaining gardens created at the end of the Heian Period, the peak of Imperial Japan. Wander its tree- and water-lined paths and fill your soul with a resounding sense of peace.

Tea House 'Shakusui-tei'

Tucked away in our historic ikeniwa sits our traditional tea house, where Japanese sweets and matcha tea is served and an evening glass of Kyoto sake or premium Champagne on the terrace provides the perfect opportunity to gaze at the sparkling light of the pond's reflections. Private tea ceremony or private function such as cocktail reception is available.
