SITUATION
激動の時代の首都 恭仁京Capital in turbulent times
天平12年（740年）聖武天皇は、平城京から恭仁京へと遷都しました。
当時は、飢饉や地震、天然痘の大流行や反乱により、社会全体が不安に包まれており、国家の転換期を迎えた激動の時代に、政治の中心となったのが、恭仁宮でした。
激動を象徴するように、その後も遷都が繰り返され、今は静かに、恭仁宮跡に残る大極殿の礎石が、当時を偲ばせています。
In 740, Emperor Shomu moved the capital from Heijokyo to Kunikyu.
At that time, the entire society was shrouded in anxiety due to famine, earthquakes, smallpox outbreaks, and rebellions, and during this turbulent period when the nation was at a turning point, Kunikyu became the center of politics.
Symbolizing the upheaval, the capital was moved repeatedly after that, and now the cornerstone of Daigokuden, which remains on the ruins of Kunikyu, still stands as a reminder of those days.
当尾(とうの)石仏の里Tono Stone Buddha Village
平安時代の後期、奈良とのつながりから多くの修行僧がこの地に集まり、仏教信仰にいそしんでいました。やがて、多くの伽藍、堂塔が建⽴されたことから、塔婆が⽴ち並ぶ尾根ということで「塔尾（とうの）」と呼ばれるようになったと伝えられています。
当尾地域にある浄瑠璃寺や岩船寺の周辺には、「わらい仏」や「一願不動」などの石仏が点在し、山村風景の中、歴史を感じながら散策することができます。
In the latter half of the Heian period, many monks gathered here to practice their Buddhist faith due to its connection with Nara.
Over time, the hermitage where the monks lived transformed into a temple and became known as ”Pagoda Ridge,” and today it is known as the “Tono Region.”
The area around Joruriji Temple and Gensenji Temple in the Tono area is dotted with stone Buddha statues such as “Waraibotoke” and “Ichiganfudo,” allowing you to take a stroll through the mountain village scenery while feeling the history.
海住山寺Kaijyusenji Temple
聖武天皇が平城宮から遷都した恭仁宮を眺める山中にあり、境内からは、かつて泉川と呼ばれた木津川を展望することができます。国宝五重塔は、鎌倉時代に建立されたもので、初重には裳階（もこし）が設けられ、心柱が初重天井の上から建てられているのが特徴です。また、本尊の十一面観音立像は平安時代のもので重要文化財に指定されています。
Kaijyusenji Temple is located in the mountains overlooking Kunikyu, where Emperor Shomu moved his capital from Heijokyo, and from the precincts you can see the Kizugawa River, which was once called Izumikawa. The national treasure five-storied pagoda was built during the Kamakura period, and is characterized by the fact that it has a mokoshi floor on the first floor, and a central pillar that is built above the first ceiling. In addition, the principal image, the eleven-faced Kannon standing statue, dates from the Heian period and is designated as an important cultural property.
岩船寺Gansenji Temple
寺の縁起では、聖武天皇の勅願により行基が奈良時代に建立した阿弥陀堂がそのはじまりとされます。
本尊の阿弥陀如来坐像(重要文化財)は高さ3メートルに迫る一木造りで、10世紀を代表する仏像として知られています。また、三重塔（室町時代）は中世後期の代表作ともいわれており、重要文化財に指定されています。
花の寺としても有名で、季節の花々が境内を彩ります。
The origin of the temple is said to be Amida-do Hall, which Gyoki built in the Nara Period at the request of Emperor Shomu.The principal image, the seated statue of Amitabha Nyorai (Important Cultural Property), is nearly 3 meters tall and is made from a single piece of wood, and is known as one of the most representative Buddhist statues of the 10th century.
Additionally, the three-storied pagoda (Muromachi period) is said to be a masterpiece of the late medieval period and is designated as an important cultural property.
恭仁宮Kunikyu
三方を山に囲まれ、南に川がながれているという、当時の都を置く上で理想の地だったと考えられています。のちに万葉集を編纂したことで著名な大伴家持も、若手官人として恭仁宮におり、「今造る久迩の都は山川のさやけき見ればうべ知らすらし（いまつくる くにのみやこは やまかわの さやけきみれば うべしらすらし）」と詠み、聖武天皇が都を置くのももっともだという歌を残しています。いまも美しい『恭仁宮-KUNIKYU-』をご体感ください。
Surrounded by mountains on three sides and with a river flowing to the south, it is thought to have been an ideal location for the capital at the time. Otomono Yakamochi, who is famous for compiling Manyoshu at a later date, was a young government official at Kunikyu. He wrote a tanka poem: “The newly created capital of Kuni no miyako, with its pure mountains and rivers, is truly the place where Emperor Shomu will reign as his capital”. 浄瑠璃寺Joruriji Temple
寺の縁起には、奈良時代に聖武天皇が僧行基に命じて建立させたのがはじまりと伝えているのですが、浄瑠璃寺の記録「浄瑠璃寺流記事」の記すところは、永承二年(1047)に、当麻出身の僧義明が薬師如来を安置して開基したことを伝えています。
極楽浄土を表現した庭園は、国の特別名勝に指定されており、宝池を中心に、西に本堂・九体阿弥陀仏、東に三重塔・薬師如来を祀る平安時代の形を今に伝えています。
The area in the southeastern part of the city, near the prefectural border with Nara Prefecture, has been called Odawara since ancient times, and in the late Heian period, many monks gathered here to practice their Buddhist faith, living in hermitages in hilly valleys and peaks. Odawara was largely divided into two parts, east and west, with Zuigan-ji (abandoned temple) in the center and a cluster of sub-temples and hermitages in the east. The western part is also called Nishi-Odawara, centering on Joruriji Temple. According to temple records, the temple was first built in the Nara period by Emperor Shomu, who ordered the monk Gyoki to build it. On the other hand, the record of Joruriji Temple, "Joruriji Jiruki" (Important Cultural Property), tells that the temple was founded in Eisho 2 (1047) by Gimei, a monk from Toma, enshrining Yakushi Nyorai (Buddha of Healing).
